How to Make an Acoustic Panel

    Absorber

    • 1). Buy a piece of rigid fiberglass and cut it to your desired size using a knife. The size of the rigid fiberglass required depends on the size of your studio. A 2-foot by 3-foot piece of rigid fiberglass should provide ample absorption quality for an average-size studio.

    • 2). Cover your piece of rigid fiberglass in thin-mesh fabric. This does not improve the absorption quality of the fiberglass in any way—it just makes it look better on the wall of your studio. If you like, you can keep the fiberglass as it is, but it does tend to look fairly unsightly.

    • 3). Hang the rigid fiberglass on the wall of your studio, and you have created your very own absorber panel.

    Diffusor

    • 1). Create a grid of 2-inch squares on your 2-foot by 2-foot wooden board, using a pencil and a ruler. First, draw horizontal lines across the board, 2 inches apart, and then draw vertical lines to create a grid of 144 squares.

    • 2). Using the pencil and ruler again, divide the seven wooden blocks into pieces of varying lengths. You need 15 sections measuring 7-1/2 inches, 40 sections measuring 5-5/8 inches, 38 sections measuring 3-3/4 inches, and 38 sections measuring 1-7/8 inches.

    • 3). Saw along the lines you have drawn to create 131 shorter wooden blocks. Attach these blocks, on-end, to your grid of wooden squares using wood glue. There is no set pattern, but blocks of the same length should be spread evenly over the board, as should the 13 empty squares with no block attached.

    • 4). Leave the diffusor board overnight to let the glue dry. At the very least, you should let it dry for a few hours. Paint the diffusor board if you like, although this is purely for aesthetic reasons and will not improve its functionality.

    • 5). Hang the diffusor board on the wall of your studio. The best place to hang a diffusor board is on the first wall sound waves will hit—the wall your speakers face.
