Gout Treatment Medication

27
When you have gout, you need to deal with the pain and inflammation first, and then work on reducing the symptoms, both in number and level of pain.
Gout treatment medication is available to do both, though not everything will work for all sufferers.
The first thing you need to do is get a doctor's diagnosis that what you have is, in fact, gout, as there are several other diseases...
and other types of arthritis...
that have similar symptoms.
Blood tests alone will not ascertain that you have gout, since your uric acid levels may be normal at the time of the testing.
Rather, fluid should be drawn from the joint that is bothering you, to determine if uric acids crystals have settled there.
Once that diagnosis has been made, the doctor will recommend a short term gout treatment medication that may include nonsteroidal anti inflammatory drugs (aspirin is not recommended since it can change uric acid levels and make the attack even more painful).
Colchisine is often prescribed, both for short and long term treatments, and steroids may be recommended when neither of the other two work.
Once the pain, swelling, and inflammation have receded, the physician may recommend drugs to reduce the uric acid levels in your blood.
If you were already on these drugs when the attack occurred, you would continue taking them.
If not, you would not start them until after the attack is completely over.
Your doctor might at this point suggest a gout treatment medication such as allopurinol or febuxostate, which would slow down the production of uric acid, or uricosuric agents, which work in the kidneys to increase the elimination of uric acid.
Losartan is commonly used for treating hypertension, but it also can lower the levels of uric acid in your system.
Fenofibrate controls triglycerides in the blood, which is also beneficial.
