Proper Male Attire for an Inaugural Ball
- The tuxedo is a dress suit, which is traditionally black or white, but can be obtained in other colors as well. Available as a double or single breasted jacket, it has silk lapels and a cut similar to a conventional suit jacket, with the hem down the side of the trousers sometimes sporting a silk stripe. Tuxedos can be bought or rented, depending on how long you will need one.
- A dress shirt is designed to be worn with a tuxedo. It has a winged or traditional collar, a double cuff and a different shirt pattern on the bib area from the rest of the shirt.
- A bow tie is worn around the neck with a tuxedo jacket. The bow tie can either be a tie-your-own tie, or an easier pre-tied bow tie, which can be attached with a hook and loop.
- Cufflinks secure the double cuff of the dress shirt. These are available in a variety of styles, and you should wear a pair suited to the occasion.
- Formal dress shoes are the best attire to be worn with a tuxedo suit. These are polished black shoes, either slip-on or laced.
- A cummerbund is an optional extra for a tuxedo suit, and is a wide sash worn around the waist, which is generally of a matching color and material to the bow tie being worn.
- Wearing a waistcoat under a tuxedo is optional but allows the wearer to add a personal touch to a formal outfit, with waistcoats being available in a variety of styles. The style of the waistcoat should be formal enough for the occasion of an inaugural ball.
