How to Draw and Design Clown Costumes
- 1). Explore what type of clown you would like to draw and design. According to All About Clowns, there are several types, including The White Face Clown, The Auguste Clown, The Tramp, Hobo & Bag Lady, and The Character Clown. Each clown type portrays different actions along with their all around look of clothing and makeup.
- 2). Print a downloaded fashion template or purchase one at your local fabric store. Templates are normally between $1 and $25. Place a sheet of layout paper over your template and trace the design. Layout paper is a fine semi-opaque paper that allows you to see an image beneath it, like tracing paper but a bit thicker, and can be used in presentations. You may want to only trace the body of the template in order to create your own clown face.
- 3). Draw an egg shape for the head, on your layout paper with a pencil, then add the facial guidelines in the middle of your egg. One straight line from top to bottom and then four vertical lines for the forehead, eyes, nose and mouth. Now, draw out the shape of the clown hair on both sides. Hair can be curly, braided, or spiked out for killer clowns. Be creative.
- 4). Draw an upside-down triangle on your clown's forehead by connecting the vertical forehead line as the base of your triangle, with the point being in line with your clown's chin. Draw two eyebrows and eyes on either side of the point of the upside-down triangle. Eyes can be small, big, or even two different types to add scar and dimension. You may even want to add wrinkles or crease lines to their eyes and forehead.
- 5). Next draw him or her a big, wide-open smile, killer teeth, open, rotted smile or sad, frowning mouth under the last vertical line of your egg. Here you can choose to add a ruffle at the base of your clown's neck. Ruffles can be scalloped or patched like a quilt. Finish by drawing a big, round red nose above your clown's mouth or another nose shape of your choice.
- 6). Draw the costume you have imagined using colored pencils. Clowns can be dressed in practically anything. Think about the type of clown you've chosen. A hobo may have patches and look dirty, a killer clown may seem happy until he opens his mouth, or maybe your clown is surly with a big belly. Clowns can wear extra-short pants, vests, big or mismatched shoes, pajamas, patchwork skirts, bright shirts and ties, overalls, rope belts, gloves and glasses. Combine styles in your own way to create the clown you want to design. The possibilities are endless. Gather magazines and photographs from the Internet to gain new ideas and insight into the style you want your clown to have.
