Yearn to Be Free

35
Every so often, I get restless.
I feel hemmed in and I must get away from things around me.
When I was younger, I used to get drunk to solve that problem.
As I got older and wiser, I found what I was searching for.
To fly is a gift of separation from the earth for a while.
It helps me to think clearly.
The gift of altitude gives me more than just far vision.
It gives me peace.
The preflight is finished, the engine OK.
The cockpit door's open, as if to say climb on inside, let's go for a spin.
I think for a moment, then I climb in.
The engine kicks over and idles a while, and then, when she's warm, I see on the dial.
I taxi my lady to the end of the strip.
I do the last checks and get ready to rip.
I look all around, there's no traffic about, so I push in the throttle and take her out.
She rolls down the runway and then, with a bump, she leaps in the air and the gear comes up, thump! This is her place, where she's meant to be.
We ride the blue skyway, my lady and me.
Over three thousand feet, the Earth drops away.
A feeling of peace seems to chase my dismay.
My troubles seem little, my problems are small.
The sky is so blue I thank God for it all.
I look to the Earth with few passionate words 'cause I live in the sky, and I fly like the birds Afterwards, when I return to the Earth, I seem to have gained some perspective on my problems.
It's always a sad moment for me, but I know that I must return to my responsibilities.
Things will be alright for a while.
