Kent Island, in Chesapeake Bay, Maryland is known all over the world for its wonderful fishing. Among anglers it is known as the place where one can enjoy a wonderful day, in a beautiful location, while satisfying one's desire to catch the limit on his fish. There is no doubt that one will find Maryland fishing at its best off of Kent Island.

Native American Matapeake Indians originally occupied the island, and a portion of it bears their name today. Tribes on the mainland visited the area in summer months to take advantage of the fishing and other shellfish such as crabs and exchange information. The island was eventually visited by English explorers and, in the 1600's, they developed a settlement there.

Kent Island is the oldest English settlement in Maryland and was first named Kent Fort by one of the settlers after his home town. Maryland and Virginia argued for many years as to who owned the island and it continued until 1776. There are many islands in Chesapeake Bay but Kent Island is the largest, being over 200 miles long and up to 30 miles wide.

Chesapeake Bay has a constant flow of fresh water from over 400 creeks, rivers and other tributaries. This provides an excellent breeding ground for fish, and, as a result, a fisherman can always catch his limit. The over sixty-four thousand square miles of waterway offer unlimited opportunities for those who enjoy this sport.

Whether trolling for Striped Bass (Rockfish), Blues or Trout or bottom fishing for White Perch, Hardhead and Spot any fisherman can catch his limit of fish. One will find all kinds of skills needed to bring in the fish as each type responds differently when hooked. With the right kind of bait and gear, one can have a delightful day engaging in a sport that is not only fun, but exciting as well.

Catching one of the enormous Striped Bass that is located in this area is a thrilling moment for the ardent fisherman. It is an experience that no other sport can give. Charter boats are available to take one to the best fishing spots and the boat captains know exactly where to go.

An excited fisherman once caught a striped bass, in the Bay, that weighed 67 pounds and 8 ounces. That set a record of the largest fish ever caught there. A fishing competition is held from April 17 to May 17 in which a trophy is given to those catching one of these fish that is 28 inches long or longer. One is allowed to catch two Striped Bass, 18 inches or longer from May to December. Regardless of the date chosen, one will find Maryland fishing at its best off of Kent Island.
