How to Deduct Health Insurance Premiums From the IRS
- 1). Total the insurance premiums you paid for health care coverage during the year.
- 2). Add the total of insurance premiums to the total out-of-pocket money you paid for medical care.
- 3). Enter the dollar amount from Step 2 into line 1 of IRS Schedule A, Form 1040.
- 4). Enter your AGI, which can found on Form 1040, line 38, into line 2 of IRS Schedule A, Form 1040.
- 5). Multiply your AGI by .075 and enter the result on line 3 of IRS Schedule A, Form 1040.
- 6). Enter a zero on line 4 if line 3 is higher than line 1. If line 1 is higher, subtract line 3 from line 1 and enter the result on line 4. This is the amount that you can deduct, including insurance premiums, for medical expenses.
