In the U.S., a tax rebate is a one-time payment of money returned to tax filers by an act of Congress. The amount of the rebate usually depends on the filer's taxable income, although there is also a minimum rebate amount that everyone who qualifies receives. A tax rebate is one way for a government to stimulate its country's economy. - To be eligible for the tax rebate, a filer must be older than 18 and cannot be qualified as a dependent on anyone else's return.
- To receive the tax rebate, a person has to be an American citizen.
- File your taxes to get a rebate. You must be working and paying into Social Security, even if self-employed. Even if you aren't required to file, if you meet the other qualifications you must file a return to receive a rebate check. Depending on the year of the rebate, there are income limits. For instance, to be eligible for the full 2008 stimulus rebate, single tax filers must have had 2007 adjusted gross income (AGI) below $75,000 and joint filers needed to have AGI below $150,000.
