Pregnancy - A Woman’S Three Options

3
While the majority of women who discover they are pregnant are delighted at the prospect, there will be some who are distraught and unhappy with the news.

Sadly not every baby is wanted.

But, after the initial shock has worn off, a woman has to make the right decision for her. Whether she keeps the baby and does her best to be a good mum, has the pregnancy terminated early on, or gives her baby up for adoption are the three basic life choices facing her and, if he is around, the baby's father.

Whatever decision she makes, her life will never be the same.

Happily this question never arises for most mums-to-be who, after having their pregnancy confirmed, look forward to their baby's due date and settle into a healthy, happy pregnancy.

If the pregnancy is not planned or worse, unwanted, then the woman should consider her options carefully. Talking to someone outside of the family circle could help. Writing down her thoughts, feelings and fears may help her see things clearly, as can considering her beliefs and her current circumstances.

Becoming a parent is an incredible gift. Babies bring so much joy and happiness into a home. But if the mum-to-be is little more than a child herself, is it really feasible to go through a pregnancy and launch into motherhood at such a tender age?

A woman who is pregnant with an unplanned baby should ask herself if she will be alone and could she cope? Will the father give any practical or financial help? Will her family or friends help with childcare? Does she have somewhere stable and suitable to live with her child? Will the baby's father be around to help? Will she still be able to achieve her long term goals to make a better life for her and her child?

If the woman decides to go ahead with the pregnancy, but doesn't want to keep the baby, then adoption can be considered.

Adoption provides a child with new legal parents. It severs the legal relationship between the child and her birth parents and establishes a new one with the adoptive parents. They are arranged by adoption agencies and are made legal by the courts so once the adoption order is finalised it cannot be undone even if the birth mother changes her mind.

Adoption advice is available from local social services departments, adoption agencies and GP's surgeries.

There is always a huge waiting list for couples wanting to adopt babies, but some women will decide they really can't go ahead with a pregnancy and, for whatever reason, will decide to have an abortion - or termination.

GPs can refer their patients to an NHS hospital or abortion clinic.

NHS abortions, which are free, are arranged within three weeks following the initial consultation, although it could be as soon as 24 hours later.

Private abortion clinics will charge, but the procedure can be carried out at the woman's convenience.
