How to Easily Install Lighting
- 1). Cut the female plug (the one with holes, not prongs) off the end of an extension cord that is long enough to easily reach from a power outlet to where you want your new light fixture to hang.
- 2). Cut off any outer insulation that surrounds all of the extension cord's wires, then use wire strippers to strip insulation off the last one-half inch of each wire inside the cord.
- 3). Assemble your ceiling light fixture as instructed in its packaging. However, instead of attaching the fixture to a ceiling plate, fit S-hooks through the screw holes that would attach the fixture to the ceiling plate instead.
- 4). Attach the fixture to the exposed wires of your extension cord with wire nuts, instead of attaching it to the ceiling wires, as instructed by the light fixture's manufacturer. Wrap the entire connection, including wire nuts, with electrical tape.
- 5). Install two ceiling hooks into the ceiling where you want the fixture to hang. These may be screw-in hooks that require no tools, or they may be anchor hooks that require a drill or screwdriver to install. This will depend on your ceiling strength and the weight of your light fixture. Install them the same width apart as the S-hooks you attached to your fixture.
- 6). Hang the S-hooks from your ceiling hooks and pinch the ends closed with pliers to secure the fixture. Tuck the taped electrical connection between the fixture and the ceiling so it cannot be seen.
- 7). Install an additional ceiling hook at the edge of the ceiling, directly above your power outlet and loop the cord over this hook to keep it against the ceiling until it turns the corner to drop down the wall.
- 8). Place cord covers over the extension cord all along its length and attach them to the ceiling and wall with the adhesive type recommended by the cord cover manufacturer. If none is recommended, a general construction adhesive will work.
- 9). Plug your fixture into the outlet to turn it on.
