How to Get That Old School Look on My Paintings
- 1). Coat the surface of the painting evenly with a thin layer of pre-antiquing medium, using a paintbrush, to preserve the original painting.
- 2). Suspend an oil-based antiquing medium in a transparent oil and mineral spirit medium. Apply evenly to your project using a clean, moist cloth or thick brush, enhancing and darkening any dirt present on the surface for an aged effect. Wipe off any excess antiquing medium with a clean cloth. Let dry for 24 hours.
- 3). Splatter the same mixture haphazardly across the painting's surface with a toothbrush to imitate insect infestations.
- 4). Rub sections of the painting gently with steel wool to lighten painted areas and mimic long-term light exposure. Consider the placement of the painting; wear down painted areas exposed to direct sunlight more severely than shaded areas.
- 5). Mix small amounts of raw sienna and water with raw umber acrylic paint. Distribute across the surface of the painting with a thick brush, paying particular attention to any cracks.
