How to Replace the Emergency Brake Handle for the 1999 Saturn SL2
- 1). Remove the left and right extension panels at the front of the center console. Pull on the panels to release the Velcro fasteners.
- 2). Pry the power window switch module from the console with a small screwdriver on models equipped with power windows and detach the electrical connection to the switch.
- 3). Push the emergency brake handle button on the end of the lever and pull the lever up.
- 4). Remove the retaining screw on the cover with a screwdriver and remove the cover from the handle.
- 5). Pull up on the shift knob on models equipped with a manual transmission to remove the knob from the shift lever.
- 6). Push in the gear selector button and tape it closed on models equipped with an automatic transmission.
- 7). Remove the two screws near the rear of the console and the two screws at the front of the console with a screwdriver and remove the console from the interior.
- 8). Remove the three bolts at the base of the emergency brake handle with a socket wrench. One of the bolts holds a ground wire; safely disconnect the wire from the bolt and set it aside.
- 9). Detach the emergency brake sensor from the handle, pushing the two clips on the harness together to disconnect it.

Loosen the adjuster bolt with a socket wrench on the side of the handle to create slack on the two emergency brake handle cables attached to the lever. - 11
Detach the two cables from the emergency brake handle assembly with needle-nose pliers. - 12
Remove the emergency brake handle assembly retaining nuts with a socket wrench. - 13
Place the new emergency brake handle assembly into place and install the retaining nuts with a socket wrench. - 14
Attach the two cables to the new emergency brake handle assembly with needle-nose pliers. - 15
Tighten the adjuster bolt with a socket wrench on the side of the handle to create tension on the two emergency brake handle cables attached to the lever. - 16
Attach the emergency brake sensor to the emergency brake handle assembly, pushing the harness into the connector on the assembly. - 17
Install the three bolts at the base of the emergency brake handle with a socket wrench, attaching the ground wire to one of the bolts before installation. - 18
Place the console over the shift levers and install the two screws near the rear of the console and the two screws at the front of the console with a screwdriver. - 19
Remove the tape from the gear selector button on models equipped with an automatic transmission. - 20
Place the shift lever onto the shift knob and push down on models equipped with a manual transmission. - 21
Place the emergency brake handle cover over the handle and install the retaining screw with a screwdriver. - 22
Push the emergency brake handle button on the end of the lever and push the lever down. - 23
Attach the electrical connection to the power window switch module in the center console on models equipped with power windows and set the module into the center console. - 24
Replace the left and right extension panels at the front of the center console. Push on the panels to engage the Velcro fasteners.
