Four Solutions for Emergency Water Storage
These are troubling times. One only needs to watch the news to learn of uncertainty, disasters, and lack of peace. Even though we don't know what the future holds, we can be prepared, calm and have peace of mind. I would like to show Four Solutions for Emergency Water Storage you can implement into your emergency management plan. A plan created by you, which will provide for the needs of your family and give you peace of mind. This plan will begin with your family's most basic need: water.
A critical first step in your emergency plan is to store pure, safe water. On a normal day, most people need to drink at least two quarts (half gallon) of water. Those living in hot environments, children, nursing mothers and people with illness need even more. Water is also needed for personal hygiene and food preparation. At least one gallon per person, per day is the recommended quantity.
There are steps to prepare your own containers of water. I choose to use commercially packaged water since I feel it is the safest and most reliable. Each solution has three factors for you to use to help you decide which choice is best for you. These factors include: cost, space needed for storage and shelf life.
Four Solutions for Emergency Water Storage:
1 Bottled water purchased from your local Super Market or grocery store. I found cases of bottled water on sale about every-other month at my local store. I bought cases for $3.33, when I used coupons. This totals $1.02 per gallon. Each person will need @ 4 bottles per day. This is a great price but it has two drawbacks; they have only 1-2 year shelf life and they require more storage space, since it is recommended to leave the plastic wrap on the cases.
2 Solution number two is 8.5oz Boxed Water. They are in 27 box, cases. I can purchase these for $5.92 per gallon. Every person will need about 7.5 boxes per day. This solution requires the least amount of space since each 8.5 Box can be stored separately. Boxes of water have a 1-5 year shelf life.
3 The third solution is 4.227oz Water Pouches. They come in cases if 64 pouches. I can get these from my supplier, for $7.68 per gallon. Every person will need a little more than 15 per day. Water pouches are handy and easy to store in small spaces. They also have a shelf life of 1-5 years.
4 The last solution is Canned Drinking Water. These come in cases of 24 cans. They can be purchased for $7.68 per gallon. Every person will need 1 and 2/3 can per day. These cans can be stored in a variety of places. These cans have the longest storage life – 30 years!
Now, you can use this information to build your emergency water storage plan for your family. A wise place to start is storing at least a two-week supply for all family members. Store as much as you can, if this is not possible. Remember; don't ration water if supplies start thinning. To keep your body healthy today, drink what you need.
If a hurricane, winter storm, earthquake, or other disaster strikes, you may not have electricity or access to clean, pure water for days or even weeks. By taking some time now to store emergency water supplies, you will be able to provide for your entire family.
