Design Ideas for the Basements of Raised Ranches

    Entryway

    • One of the most important features of a raised-ranch basement is an accessible entryway. Select French doors if your basement has a formal finished look. French doors allow you to open both doors at once if you need a wider opening for installing new furniture or appliances. Opt for sliding glass doors if you have pets or a walkout basement that leads to your backyard. If the basement door is used as a primary entrance, select a sturdy wood or synthetic door with a glass screen to protect it from weathering.

    Flooring

    • Since the basement is a highly visible area in a raised ranch, choose flooring that is warm and welcoming. Avoid exposed cement floors that tend to be cold and uncomfortable. Select a high-traffic neutral carpet in beige, tan or light brown to add warmth to the space. If you have pets or want to keep the basement area cool, select ceramic tile or linoleum for a raised-ranch basement design. Install hardwood flooring if you want your basement to have a finished appearance that resembles a den. Only use hardwood flooring if you have drywall in your basement because concrete walls and wood paneling do not complement hardwood flooring.

    Lighting

    • Because of the non-vaulted ceilings and ground-level location, lighting is especially important in a raised-ranch basement. Avoid fluorescent tube lights and high-watt halogen light bulbs that cast a harsh bluish-white glow in the space. Choose soft-white 60-watt bulbs for light fixtures, chandeliers, floor lamps and table lamps. To provide ambiance and additional lighting, place candles on end tables and coffee tables around the room.

    Furnishings

    • If you want your entryway basement to be a comfortable living space that welcomes family and friends, opt for comfortable seating. Select an oversized couch and chair designed with an earth-tone fabric or a soft leather. Choose natural wood accent tables and wrought iron lamp stands. Accessorize with plush decorative pillows, throw rugs and colorful wall art. Warm colors like chocolate brown, dark red, deep purple and yellow-gold make a raised-ranch basement a welcoming environment.
