Tequila comes in two main varieties: mixed and 100 percent pure agave. Mixed tequilas use at least 50 percent agave with fructose or glucose making up the rest. Gold tequila is a white or silver tequila that has caramel or food coloring added to it. When caramel is added, it lessens the harshness of the silver or white tequila, which is un-aged and is bottled or stored immediately after distillation. There are many drink recipes that celebrate gold tequila. - A flavored or traditional margarita is perhaps the most common or popular drink to contain gold tequila. A margarita is made with a half ounce of gold tequila, a half ounce of triple sec, 2 ounces of orange juice, 2 ounces of sour mix and 8 ounces of ice. Margaritas can be ordered on the rocks or blended. When a margarita is made on the rocks, the liquors and juices are shaken together and poured over ice cubes. In a blended margarita, the ingredients, including ice, are mixed together in a blender and poured into a wide-mouthed glass. Glasses are often rimmed with salt or sugar. Sugar is usually used along the glass rim with flavored margaritas while salt is added to original-flavored margaritas, which tend to taste heavily of lime. Margaritas made with gold tequila are usually called "Golden Margaritas" or "Ultimate Golden Margaritas."
- A simple drink made with gold tequila is a tequila and tonic. This drink is made with 2 ounces of gold tequila which is poured into an 8-ounce glass. The glass is then filled with chilled tonic water. A lime wedge is usually added to the glass rim as a garnish. Drinkers may choose to squeeze the lime into the drink for added flavor. The tonic water helps lessen the bite of the tequila so that it can be sipped instead of swallowed quickly as with a shot of pure gold tequila. Any brand of gold tequila may be used such as Cabo Wabo, Jose Cuervo, Jose Cuervo 1800, Margaritaville or Matador.
- A tequila sunrise is a popular drink that doesn't call for gold tequila but can certainly be made with it. Combine 2 ounces of gold tequila, orange juice and two dashes of grenadine syrup. Pour the tequila into a highball glass filled with ice and fill up the glass the remainder of the way with orange juice. Stir the liquids together and when thoroughly mixed, tilt the glass to the side and pour the two dashes of grenadine down the inside of the glass quickly. The grenadine should go to the bottom of the glass and then begin to float up through the drink slowly. Garnish with a maraschino cherry and orange wedge, if desired.
