Belt Installation of John Deere Mower Decks
- 1). Raise the mower deck into its highest position with the deck adjustment lever.
- 2). Position a wooden block under each side of the mower deck and then lower the deck onto the blocks. This takes pressure off the torsion rods.
- 3). Remove the cotter pins from the torsion pins that extend through the torsion rods and mounting brackets on the underside of the tractor. With the cotter pins removed, pull the torsion pins out and lower the torsion rods. In some cases, instead of cotter pins, the torsion pins have nuts threaded onto their ends. If this is the case, remove the nuts with a wrench.
- 4). Slide the mower deck forward and then pull the drive belt off the pulley mounted on the underside of the motor.
- 5). Pull the belt back through the belt guard and then slide the mower deck out from under the lawn tractor.
- 6). Remove the belt from the pulley system on the deck. If necessary, make a diagram so you can remember how to route the new belt.
- 7). Place the new belt onto the mower deck's pulley system and then slide the deck back under the lawn tractor.
- 8). Slide the belt through the belt guard and then around the pulley mounted on the motor.
- 9). Lift up the torsion bars, line up the mounting holes on the bars with the mounting holes on the underside of the tractor and then secure them with the torsion pins and cotter pins.
