Can a Rose Bush Be Used in a Topiary?
- To create a rose standard, identify one or two strong central canes on a rose with an upright habit and remove all other canes. All growth is cut away below the base of the crown. As the top branches grow, they are trimmed into a ball shape.
- Some commercially grown standard roses are actually three roses grafted together -- a sturdy rootstock, a tall variety for the central "trunk" or cane and a colorful cultivar for the ball-shaped top or crown of the standard. These grafted standards can sometimes be more cold-sensitive than non-standardized varieties.
- Rosarian Peter Beales identifies some cultivars that can be made into standards without grafting. These include Ballerina, The Fairy, Buff Beauty and Felicia. Another standard or topiary rose form is the weeping standard. Dorothy Perkins and Alberic Barbier are among the ramblers that can be trained into weeping standards.
