How to Set Up a Canvas Tent Fly

23
    • 1). Drape the fly over the tent-top. Most canvas tents are made with an A-frame style roof, and some have an interior stove with a protruding stovepipe. If the latter is your type of tent, your tent fly should have an opening for the stovepipe. Line up the fly so that the stovepipe hole is correctly positioned, then thread the stovepipe into the hole.

    • 2). Uncoil the fly rigging (the ropes used to stake the fly to the ground).

    • 3). Walk, holding one of the rigging ropes, a few feet from the tent wall or until the rope is straight, and place the rope on the ground. Keep the rope in line with the angle of the roof. An easy way to do this is to picture an imaginary line starting at the apex of the roof and extending down the roof-line to the ground.

    • 4). Tie a knot with the rope around the tent stake, then hammer the stake into the ground. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for the remaining rigging on the side that you started.

    • 5). Go to the other side of the tent and uncoil the rigging. This time, walk out from the tent in the same manner as in Step 3, then pull the rope as taut as possible without straining or tearing the fly. Tie a knot around the stake, then hammer the stake into the ground. Repeat for the remaining rigging.
