Role-Playing Games for Kids
- Tabletop role-playing games are played in the home, using commerical board games. These types of games generally suit older children and teens. Many such role-playing games exist, and one of the most well known is Dungeons and Dragons. These games are designed to be played either by groups of players, or alone. Usually one player acts as the "game master," serving as arbiter when necessary and taking the lead in progressing the game. Other players take on the role of characters, taking on challenges and working towards particular aims to produce a resolution to the game's story.
- In live action role-playing games, the players take on roles that they literally act out. Small children often spontaneously invent their own role-playing games, acting out scenes they have seen adults or characters in books and movies enact. More organized live action role-playing games are often also played by adults who are members of role-playing groups, but children can also take part in these alongside adults, or they can play together in a more informal way.
- Electronic role-playing games work in a similar way to tabletop games, except that the action takes place on a computer. Some such games are not considered suitable for children, but many are designed especially for children. These include Pokemon role-playing computer games. Many other electronic role-playing games can be played by both children and adults, although parents should check the content of games before they allow their children to play.
- Role-playing games can be used by both parents and teachers in an educational setting. For example, a company called The Roleplay Workshop produce Abantey, a game for children aged 10 and over. Abantey aims to help children develop multiple skills, including math, problem solving, imagination and creativity. Teachers may also use role-playing games in the classroom in order to teach students particular skills, such as language skills or conflict resolution.
