Defective Thermal Fuse

• A thermal fuse is a safety device found on GE dryers. The fuse is meant to blow when the temperature in the dryer becomes too hot to avoid overheating the dryer. When this mechanism blows, it can't be reset. Until the part is replaced, your dryer won't fully perform. Not uncommonly the dryer will put out only low amounts of heat or none at all. Refer to your dryer manual for assistance in finding the fuse. If it's blown, it will be black.
  
  

Failing Heating Element

• On most GE electric dryers, electrical power provides energy to the heating element. The heating element heats air as it passes over it. Once heated, the air is pushed into the drum to dry clothes. If the heating element's metal coils begin to wear, the element puts out less heat than it otherwise would. Consequently, the dryer can't heat air to extremely hot temperatures commonly associated with the "high heat" setting. Contact a dryer repair technician to replace the faulty heating element; swapping out just one defective coil isn't possible.
  
  

Broken Thermostat

• Inside most GE dryers is a thermostat that measures the air temperature inside the drum. It directs the heating element to stop emitting heat or to lower the heat output when the temperature reaches a certain level. However, if the thermostat breaks, it's unable to effectively gage the temperature inside the drum, and thus the dryer might not reach the correct temperature. Review your dryer manual for guidance on locating the thermostat. It's typically a small plastic circular device that's bolted to the interior of the drum. If it's cracked or broken in any way, switch it out with a new one. You can usually obtain a new thermostat from a store that sells appliances.
  
  

Obstructed Exhaust System

• If airflow is blocked due to a significant amount of lint in your dryer's exhaust system, it can interfere with the dryer's temperature settings. In particular, the dryer might not get as hot as it needs to despite that the dryer is set to a "high heat" setting. Clean out the exhaust system with a vacuum to remove lint and improve airflow.
