How to Find Out Who My Ancestors Are in Norway
- 1). Explore the website "Norway Heritage" (see Resources). Norway Heritage provides a free and detailed index of ships from Norway that arrived in North America between the years of 1825 and 1925. Norway Heritage also has an index of arrivals of passenger ships all over the planet from newspaper clippings between 1840 and 1894. Search for the names of your ancestors to uncover exactly when they arrived from Norway. The website also offers forums where guests can post inquiries and perhaps connect with distant or not-so-distant relatives who might have additional information or leads.
- 2). Search for your Norwegian ancestors' historical records by their first and last names, as well as by their locations, on FamilySearch (see Resources), a website with vast resources for individuals who are seeking their roots from all over the planet, not simply Norway. The website offers a section devoted entirely to Norwegian genealogy and also includes information from the Norway census from 1875.
- 3). Look at the Norwegian census from 1910, which is located online (see Resources). Track down your Norwegian ancestors with information such as their name, marital status, family position, sex, job, location of birth, birthplace, age, habitual home, language, emigration year, religion and more.
- 4). Read the book "Our Norwegian Ancestors" by Ronald L. Lien. Although the book is not specifically about finding Norwegian ancestors, it has a vast amount of information regarding Norwegian heritage. It can be especially helpful for anyone who could be related to the Lien family, which is detailed for three generations in the novel.
