Snow Goose Hunting in Saskatchewan
- Saskatchewan is divided into north and south districts for waterfowl hunting purposes. The season for spring snow goose is divided into east and west areas. West of 106 degree longitude, the season lasts the entire month of April. East of 106 degree longitude, the season last for two months from April 1 until May 30. The daily limit for spring snow geese for all hunters in all districts was set at 20 in 2010, while the possession limit was 60 snow geese. The same limits apply for the autumn season that begins on Sept.1 and lasts until mid-December.
- In 2010, hunters required one permit to hunt snow geese in the spring and a permit, certificate and license to hunt geese in the fall. Because snow geese cross international borders, the federal government has a say in their hunt. federal migratory bird permits are sold in Canadian post offices at a cost of $17.85 and are required to hunt snow geese. For the fall goose season, hunters must also acquire provincial wildlife habitat certificates ($10.79) and game bird licenses. The cost of the license depends on the hunter's residency. Saskatchewan residents paid $10.79 for their licenses in 2010, while other Canadian residents paid $56.91. Foreign hunters were required to pay $113.83 for their license.
- Saskatchewan's Ministry of the Environment publishes an annual "Hunters' and Trappers' Guide" with the regulations and information required by hunters. The provincial government has established fixed opening and closing dates for hunting most species and seasons from year to year. Still, the guides should be checked every year for additional information. For example, the 2010 guide states that decoys and recorded vocalizations of bird calls are allowed for snow goose only. Hunters should consult the annual guide, available for free download on the ministry's website, for the latest information.
- The "2010 Hunters' and Trappers' Guide" published by Saskatchewan's Ministry of the Environment contains the following restrictions on snow goose hunting:
Only non-toxic shot (made from steel, bismuth, tin and tungsten-iron/matrix/nickel-iron/polymer combinations) can be used to hunt snow geese.
No person can possess or transport a migratory game bird unless at least one fully feathered wing remains attached to the bird.
It's forbidden to hunt game birds within 500 meters of a wildlife feeding station or enter any lands posted with lure crop signs.
Rifles cannot be used to hunt migratory birds; only one shotgun with a maximum capacity of two shells can be used. - There are hundreds of outfitters for hunting and fishing across Saskatchewan.
