Arthritis & Light Therapy

56

    History

    • In 2002, Microlight Corporation of America received the first Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance for a light-therapy device used for pain. The FDA continued its support of light therapy for pain in 2008, when it approved LED Technologies' DPL™ Therapy System for over-the-counter sale for muscle aches and pains, such as those experienced by arthritis sufferers.

    Mechanism

    • A light-therapy system works similar to that of a laser. It emits light as energy that can heal. In order to use it, you put the light in front of the part of the body where you are experiencing pain for at least 30 minutes a day. Some of the newer machines even use Bluewave Technology to speed the process. Most light therapy systems are portable and can be moved to various parts of the body.

    Size

    • Light-therapy systems come in many sizes to help the pain of arthritis. Small machines can be held (or strapped) to areas of the body such as the arms, legs and knees. Tabletop light therapy systems are good for arthritis in the neck as you sit in front of them. There are also large units made that you would stand in front of for constant light around more of the body.

    Availability & Cost

    • Since the FDA approval of the sale of the LED Technologies system without a prescription, many similar systems have since come on the market. Light-therapy machines for arthritis pain can are available online and in most drug stores. They vary widely in price depending on size and features. Light therapy is also available at many physical therapy offices to be used while an outpatient.

    Considerations

    • Few side effects have been reported from the use of light therapy other than eye strain and possible headache if the unit is used to close to the face or head. Though the systems are available over-the-counter, they may qualify for insurance reimbursement (or a tax deduction) if prescribed by a physician.
