How to Run a Cable From an Attic to a Room

Instructions

Longer Cable

1

Put one end of a tape measure at the point in your attic where your cable begins. Stretch the tape measure across the floor until you run out of length. Mark the space on the floor where the tape measure stopped and write this number down.
2

Start the tape measure at the mark you made on the floor in Step 1. Continue to measure the total distance it would take to run the cable from the attic down to a floor below without drilling a hole in the ground. If you have an attic access door or something similar, take into consideration that the door may need to be kept ajar to account for the cable. If you have stairs leading to your attic, measure the height and length of each step and include this in your calculations. To keep people from tripping on the cable, you'll need to run it along the wall of the room, and you'll want it to be tight against each step.
3

Add up all of the segments you measured in the previous steps. This will tell you the exact length of cable you need to purchase to run it from the attic to another room. Connect the cable to your device in your attic and begin to run the cable from one floor to the other. Use a large-sized staple gun or specialized cable tacks to bind the cable to either the floor or baseboard that surrounds your rooms. This will keep people from tripping on it. Do not put the staples or the tack through the cable -- instead, they should comfortably fit around the circumference of the cable.

Drilling

1

Drill a hole in the attic floor above the device in the room below that needs to be connected to the cable. Only drill the hole large enough for the cable to fit through. Drill all the way through the floor of the attic and the ceiling of the room below.
2

Feed the cable down through the hole and plug it into the device in the room below. One end of the cable should be connected to the electronic device in the attic, and the other end should be easily fed through the hole to the next floor of your house.
3

Connect the second end of the cable to the device in the room below the attic. Pull excess cable up into the attic and wrap it together to keep it neat.
