Uncover How To Improve Your Mental Prowess As A Baseball Player
There hasn't been a team I played for that coach hasn't said, "You need to be confident at the plate!" That is usually followed by something like, "I will give you all the support you need, but I can't teach you to be confident!" Although technically your coach can't teach you confidence, there is a path you can take to building it on your own.
I came across an article the other day that focused on Self Concept. If you are anything like me, you are probably thinking that your self concept is how you would describe yourself. Well if I were to do that in baseball terms, I would describe myself as a scrappy, hard working player who lacked speed, but had just enough talent to make himself into a good player.
After reading through my description a few times I realized I was writing down recruiting notes about myself. If your like me, you probably would of approached the exercise the same way. The only issue is, these are just adjectives describing me and no what I think.
Your self concept is set of self guiding action steps and how you visualize your success. The Dusty I know is capable of great performances, hitting doubles, making great plays, scoring runs, etc. Dusty is a baseball machine that will effectively deal with any situation he is given on the baseball field.
How does your baseball self concept measure up? Do you trust your self to succeed or are you afraid that you might fail? If your baseball self concept is weak, your performance will suffer. If you are looking to better your performance, begin building a better self concept.
Whether you have a great or poor baseball self concept, I want you to perform the following exercise. I want you to describe how you feel if you were the best baseball player on earth. Then I want you to write down what you would need to do to become the best baseball player on earth? Write down everything from baseball training, to everyday life routines. Finally, I want you to ask yourself if you are taking all the necessary steps to achieving that goal. The second you start crossing those action steps off the list is the second you start building your self concept, and thus your self confidence.
