The definition of air conditioning is the cooling, heating and dehumidification of air in an area.
An air conditioner is often abbreviated to hvac, which stands for heating, ventilation and air conditioning.

1) Roman Aqueducts - Modern electric and mechanical air conditioner are a modern invention, but the idea of cooling ones home is by no means a new thing.
It is believed wealthy Romans used water in their homes walls to cool the structure down.
2) Early Industrial Applications - At the beginning of the 20th century, hvac was used but mainly in commercial and industrial applications.
At this stage it was considered unaffordable for homes.
3) Residential Sales In The 50's - In the 1950's, systems started to appear in homes, which saw sales rapidly increase as it became more popular as well as more affordable.
4) Car Air Conditioning - Hvac systems first appeared in cars in 1939.
These systems were expensive, large and relatively inefficient.
It wasn't until the 1980's that car air con systems became affordable, small and commonplace.
5) Today's Hvac Systems - Today's systems can be found everywhere.
Nearly every building whether they be residential, commercial or industrial has hvac these days.
Air conditioners also continue to develop and get smaller, stronger as well as more efficient to run.
These days you would be hard pressed to find a modern society that has not embraced air conditioning.
