How to Install a Toggle Switch From a Dimmer Switch
- 1). Turn off the electricity to the switch circuit by turning off its breaker in the main electrical panel.
- 2). Disconnect the dimmer switch from the electrical switch box. Remove the switch plate from the dimmer by unscrewing the two screws that hold it to the wall and remove the two screws at the top and bottom of the dimmer switch that hold it into the switch box. Pull the dimmer switch from the electrical box to expose the wire connections. Remove the wire nuts from the black wires and the green ground wire that connects the dimmer switch to the power supply by twisting them counter clockwise. Discard the dimmer switch.
- 3). Wire the toggle switch into the electrical switch box. Locate the two black wires and the bare copper wire in the switch box. Wrap one of the black wires around one of the screws on the right side of the switch, wrap the remaining black wire to the other screw on the right side of the switch and wrap the bare copper wire around the green ground screw and tighten all three screws to secure the wires to the toggle switch.
- 4). Install the toggle switch into the electrical switch box by connecting it to the top and the bottom of the box with the screws provided with the switch. Cover the toggle switch with a switch cover plate, attaching it with the matching screws that came with the cover plate.
- 5). Turn on the electricity to the switch circuit by turning on its breaker in the main electrical panel.
