How to Root Japanese Persimmons
- 1). Collect seeds from a ripe Japanese persimmon fruit in autumn. Rinse the seeds in cool water to wash away the pulp. Spread the seeds on a mesh screen or colander and let them dry for an hour or two.
- 2). Place the Japanese persimmon seeds in a vacuum flask full of water that is 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Soak the seeds overnight.
- 3). Prepare a rooting pot for each of the Japanese persimmon seeds once they finish soaking. Fill 10-inch nursery containers with a mixture of 4 parts potting compost and 1 part medium-grit sand. Pour 3 to 4 cups of water into each rooting pot to moisten the soil.
- 4). Sow one Japanese persimmon seed in each pot. Press the seed 1/2 inch into the rooting mixture. Cover it completely and firm the soil around it.
- 5). Place the potted Japanese persimmon seeds on a heating mat set to 75 F near a source of bright natural light. Water the seeds as often as needed to keep the soil moist to a depth of 1 inch.
- 6). Watch for signs of germination in 20 to 30 days. Keep the seedling warm and moist until spring, and then plant it in a permanent bed once outdoor air temperatures stay above 55 F at night.
