Automatic Updates That Will Not Install

2

    Why Install Microsoft Updates?

    • The Microsoft Windows Update contains bug fixes and driver/software updates for the hardware and software components installed in your computer. Installing Microsoft updates is essential for your computer's security and performance. For those who choose not to enable automatic updating, Microsoft advises them to check out the Microsoft website at least once a week. To see which Windows updates you already have installed, click "Start," type "Update" in the search box and then select "Windows Update." In the left portion of the window, select "View update history."

    Troubleshooting Automatic Updating Problem

    • Close all programs and restart the computer. If automatic updating still fails, a problem with your Internet connection may be preventing you from downloading and installing the updates to your computer. Try navigating to another website to verify if the problem is with your Internet connection. Run a virus scan using a reputable anti-virus software and quarantine or remove viruses that may be preventing you from installing the updates.

Enabling Automatic Updating in Windows 7

    • Open "Windows Update." Click "Change Settings" in the left side of the window. Under "Important Updates," select "Install Updates Automatically (Recommended)." Select the time you want Windows to automatically install updates. Click "OK." To disable automatic updating, select "Never check for updates (not recommended)."

    Checking for Windows Updates Manually

    • If automatic updates fail to install, you have the option to check for Windows updates and install them manually. This is also an alternative option for those who choose not to enable automatic Windows updating. To do this, open "Windows Update" and click "Check for Updates" in the left side of the window. Windows will then search for available Microsoft updates for your computer. If there are updates available, a message will pop on your screen. Click this message to view the updates available. Click the checkboxes beside the updates that you want to install, click "OK" and then "Install Updates."
