Determine whether you have a gas or electric stove. Gas stoves use an open flame in their burners and have a warm surface even when they're not being used. This is because they have a small, constantly burning pilot light underneath the stove's cover. Electric stoves have metal burners that are heated by an electrical current. - 2

Place your pot or pan on the burner and add the food you want to cook, plus some kind of cooking fat or water, if needed. Use multiple pots or pans if cooking more than one food item. - 3

Turn the knob that corresponds with the burner you wish to use. Stoves have a diagram next to each knob or on the control panel of the stove that will show you which burner each knob operates. - 4). Adjust the knob until you have the appropriate amount of heat. The recipe you are cooking will dictate the level of heat required.
- 5). Follow the recipe directions to complete the meal. Remove the pots from the stove once you have completed all the steps in the recipe.
- 6). Turn all the burners to the "Off" position. Do not touch the top of the stove until all the burners have cooled off.
- 7). Wipe the stove off after the burners have cooled off. Use soap and water to remove any food or grease stains.
