    Pet Sitting in Their Home

    • Many pet owners prefer having a sitter come to their home. The animals remain at home and follow normal routines, reducing stress. Your duties in the pet owner's home may be varied. You may have to walk the dogs, perform basic grooming, clean a litter box, bring in mail, water plants and maintain an occupied look in the house. Depending on the number of animals, you may stay in the home overnight, or just stop in once or twice a day. The United States Department of Labor lists a pet sitter's average hourly wage at $10.50 per hour.

    Overnight or Daycare in Your Home

    • On occasion, you may find it more convenient to care for a pet in your own home. In the case of a small caged animal, this is easy. The Cat Health Guide advises that cats often become upset when moved to a new location or his environment changes. A strange dog, coming into your home can create problems. You must consider how well the pet gets along with you and other members of your family, human and animal. If you wish to care for more than one animal in your home, you may need to apply for a special kennel license and provide separate enclosures and outdoor runs for them. You should never agree to care for a pet in your own home until you have met the pet. Depending on the circumstances, you should negotiate the price before you accept the job.

    Dog Walking

    • There is often a demand for dog walking in large cities. An accomplished dog walker can care for several at a time. If dealing with several dogs, you must be able to control their behavior. However, dog walking can also mean just stopping at the pet's home and letting it outside into a fenced yard for a short period each day. Some dogs require more exercise and the dog walker might run, jog or bicycle with the dog. The ASPCA website advises that you will need to prepare the dogs for the weather if it is extremely cold or wet outside.

    Pet Care for Organizations

    • Often, rescue organizations, veterinarian clinics or private kennels need help with pet care. Many of these positions are voluntary, but sometimes they pay for your help. Working for one of these organizations can help you learn the necessary skills to become a certified pet sitter and add to your resume. Although certification is not necessary to have a job pet sitting, it assures pet owners that you are a professional with the necessary skills to care for their pets.
