How to Diagnose a Water Heater Repair
- 1). Inspect the thermostat of the machine if you do not have enough hot water to get through the day. If the temperature is low, turn it up to increase the water temperature. Do not set it too high to prevent scalding.
- 2). Turn off the water supply and power and drain the tank after the water has cooled. Drain by opening the drain valve located toward the bottom of the machine. This will drain any sediment that is inside your machine.
- 3). Check with your utility company to see if you are receiving enough gas to the tank to fully maximize the amount of hot water in your home. This may require a house call.
- 1). Check the drain valve for leaks. Close it all the way by hand if this does not stop the spout from leaking. Use a pair of pliers to apply greater pressure. Replace the valve if it continues to leak.
- 2). Turn down the thermostat if the pressure-release valve is leaking.
- 3). Look at all the pipes if the tank is leaking. Also inspect the valves. Look at the tank for condensation. Ventilate the storage area if there is condensation on the tank to prevent this type of leak.
