How to Match Paintings & Rugs

44
    • 1). Design a rug and painting theme. Make a statement on your character, temperaments and taste. Select your favorite motif, colors and pattern.

    • 2). Find color chips for the room's color theme. Collect color chips in three colors for the main color scheme in the painting. The chips can be set before the rug when choosing. Use the color wheel to find the complementary colors and matches.

    • 3). Choose a rug for the center of the room. In your rug pattern, repeat the shapes in the motif. Choose colors that fit the color scheme for the room. For example, deciding on a rug that has your favorite red, yellows and blue leaves a range of choice for the painting. Good color proportions make red dominant, yellow a complimentary color and blue the characteristic hue.

    • 4). Select a painting, with an appropriate shape and size for the room, in a complimentary color. When you see the right painting, the main shape in its design will match the motif. The color that first meets your eye matches the third color in the rug. A brilliant blue will make both blues expressive. Avoid a blue that pales in the same room as the rug's strong blue.

    • 5). Judge the match. Place the painting on the rug and view the harmony. When there is a final match, the two pieces together appear agreeable and lasting.

    • 6). Decide the placements in the room so the pieces work together appropriately. Their location should provide enough distance to see the painting and rug. Matching colors need distance to look distinct, yet some closeness so they feel like they have harmony.
