Less Lethal Weapons

28
If you carry a gun, you likely feel pretty safe in most situations. There are times, however, when you may want or need a non-deadly weapon. Perhaps you are trying to keep an aggressive animal at bay but you don’t want to kill it. Maybe you’re being mugged but you aren’t in fear for your life so you don’t want to use your gun. Perhaps you are in a location that prohibits firearms but you want to carry some sort of weapon.

On the other hand, maybe you don’t possess a firearm carry permit but you want the ability to defend yourself, nonetheless.

Whatever your reasons, there are a number of less lethal weapons that you can use to protect yourself and others and you will find many of these listed below. You should be aware, however, that some of these weapons may still require a permit in some states. Likewise, some states will consider the use of these weapons to be deadly force, in spite of the fact that they aren’t necessarily deadly. Always be sure to check your local laws before carrying any type of weapon.

Less Lethal Weapons:

Pepper Spray -- Pepper spray is the self-defense weapon of choice for many people, particularly those who do not carry guns. Pepper spray is usually legal for anyone to carry, depending upon the level of concentration and the ingredients used. In general, civilian pepper spray is going to be strong enough to deter the average mugger or dog, allowing you to get away from the threat.

It may not be especially effective on an attacker who is under the influence.

Tactical Batons -- A tactical baton is a blunt force weapon that is typically collapsed for easy carry but can expand when in use. Generally, people use these to strike or jab an attacker. Due to the fact that these batons are easy to conceal, though, they are illegal for civilian use in some places.

Tasers -- A Taser is a brand of electroshock weapon although the name is used colloquially for any brand of such weapons. A Taser delivers an electroshock designed to incapacitate an attacker, giving you a chance to get away. Some states and municipalities prohibit Taser use but there is no federal law regulating them.

Bladed Weapons:

From a legal standpoint, bladed weapons are typically not considered to be less lethal than a firearm. Nevertheless, there are some situations in which a knife could be your best mode of defense. While pocket knives are generally the easiest type of knife to carry and conceal, it can be difficult to open one while you are being attacked. On the other hand, sheathed knives are easy to access but harder to conceal. There are, however, shorter sheathed knives that are designed specifically for tactical situations.

Improvised Weapons:

Hopefully, you will never find yourself in a situation in which you need a weapon but don’t have one. If you do, however, don’t underestimate the stopping power of some of these improvised weapons.

Millwall Brick -- Don’t laugh but the Millwall Brick is a weapon made from a rolled up newspaper. It sounds unlikely but this thing packs a powerful punch.

Pen or Pencil -- An ordinary pen or pencil can do some damage when it has enough force behind it. If you want something with a little more oomph, though, you can even purchase pens designed to be used as weapons in a pinch.

Fist Filler -- If your only weapon is your bare hands, a fist filler will add a little more power to your punch. Hold a roll of quarters or a mini flashlight in your hand to add weight to your punch and to keep your knuckles steadier and stronger.
