How to Find Used Yamaha Outboard Motors for Sale
- 1). Purchase a large-circulation weekend newspaper from your local area and check out the classified ads. Look under the categories of "Outboard Engines", "Boats for Sale", "Used Boat Parts", "Watercraft" and "Used Engines." Not all of these categories may be available in your particular newspaper, but search for as many of them as you can find. If you see a Yamaha engine for sale that is not the size or type that you're looking for, consider calling the ad anyway and asking if the person who placed the ad has any other engines for sale or knows of any others. Networking is one of the fastest ways of finding what you're looking for. Conversely, call your local newspaper and ask to place an ad asking for used Yamaha outboard motors. Indicate in your ad that you are "paying top price." Run your ad only in weekend editions to save money and maximize your readership.
- 2). Pick up a free copy of the "Penny Saver" or other local bargain-hunter publication. Read through the ads for any mention of boats for sale, engines for sale, marine parts or anything similar. If you live in a boating area, there may be a free publication devoted solely to the sale of boats and boat parts. If so, pick up one of these publications and peruse its classified section. Once again, if you do not see the exact size and style of engine you are looking for, don't hesitate to call on a similar engine and ask if the selling party has any other engines for sale or knows of any. Place an ad in either of these two types of publications indicating that you are looking for used Yamaha outboard motors and that you are willing to "pay top price."
- 3). Get out your trusty yellow pages and look up Yamaha outboard motors. Call any dealers listed. If any dealer doesn't have what you need, ask them if they know of anyone who does. Also look under "Used Engines," "Marine Parts and Supplies" and "Water Craft." Here you should be able to find the exact size and type of engine you need, whether it is a V MAX series or a high-performance HPDI engine or one of Yamaha's 2-stroke engines.
- 4). Get online and go to Craigslist. Find your city in the list of cities. If your city (or one close to it) is not listed, then click on your state name and choose from the list of cities that are near to you. Once you have found a city close to where you live, enter the words "Used Yamaha Outboard Motors" in the search box that you will find in the upper-left portion of the screen. Make sure you have chosen "For Sale" and then click the arrow. If you do not get the results you were hoping for, try another nearby city.Post an ad on Craigslist indicating that you are looking for used Yamaha outboard motors. Keep your ad simple and to the point. If you are looking for a specific size of model of engine indicate it. To post a free ad on Craigslist, click the "POST" button in the upper-right of the screen and follow the simple directions.
- 5). Get online and go to eBay or another large online auction site (such as Yahoo auctions). Enter the words "Used Yamaha Outboard Motors" into the site's search field. In many cases, you will need to bid on any motors you find, but there may also be cases where you can purchase a motor instantly without going through the bidding process. If you do not find what you are looking for, try back later as new items are being added to the auction sites all the time. You may also sign up for an alert to be sent directly to your inbox if a Yamaha motor should be listed so that you can be one of the first to bid. Keep in mind, however, that it is not the first bidder who wins an item--it's the final bidder.
