How to Become a Licensed Tree Trimmer & Remover
- 1). Contact your local Department of Agriculture or Environmental Protection to inquire about the licensing process. Ask about apprenticeships or years of experience and request a listing of license types and a handbook for the one that suits your situation.
- 2). Check the handbook for the assessment requirements and pay attention to scheduling, fees, scoring, exam retakes and the minimum insurance requirements.
- 3). Contact the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) to request information about certification (see Resources). Ask about the ISAs Certified Arborist credential, which provides a foundation in identification, pruning, biology and safety.
- 4). Complete the requirements for your preferred credential. The ISA exam requires a fee of $250 as of May 2011. The exam consists of 200 multiple-choice questions and you must renew your certification in three-year intervals. The knowledge obtained during the certification process increases your chances of passing your state's licensing exam -- and some states waive the exam when you present your credential.
- 5). Schedule the licensing exam and wait for your results and if you did not pass the exam schedule a retake in the time frame provided by your state.
- 6). Purchase sufficient insurance, if required, to ensure you meet the minimum state qualifications.
- 7). Submit your application for licensing to the appropriate authority along with your test results, certification and insurance information.
