Wentworth Miller Breaks Through Discrimination
In a move to publicly denounce sweeping Russia's anti-gay laws, actor Wentworth Miller (born June 2, 1972) came out as gay.
Miller, known for his role as Michael Scofield in the Fox television series Prison Break, declined an invitation to the St. Petersburg International Film Festival after the country passed aggressive anti-gay laws that punishes even the suspicion of being gay with fines and possible jail time.
"As a gay man, I must decline," Miller wrote in response. Gay visibility advocate GLAAD was the first to publicize the announcement.
Rumors of Miller's sexuality had been circulating for years. He denied being gay in 2007 during an German InStyle magazine interview, later coming out in August 2013. At the time, Miller said he wanted to focus on his career: "I'm not gay, but that rumor can't be killed. I'd like to have a girlfriend and a family. But I haven't met the right one yet. Until then I'm focusing on my job. I had to wait so long for this chance I savor every second on set even if it means 14 hours of shooting a day," he told InStyle.
Miller wrote on the GLAAD website: "I cannot in good conscience participate in a celebratory occasion hosted by a country where people like myself are being systematically denied their basic right to live and love openly."
"The situation is in no way acceptable, and I cannot in good conscience participate in a celebratory occasion hosted by a country where people like myself are being systematically denied their basic right to live and love openly," he went on.
Wentworth's public move was met with praise and admiration. GLAAD spokesperson Wilson Cruz wrote: "Wentworth's bold show of support sends a powerful message to LGBT Russians, who are facing extreme violence and persecution: you are not alone... As people from across the globe continue to speak out against Russia's horrific law, more celebrities and corporations should follow his courageous lead in openly condemning Russia's anti-LGBT law."
Struggles With Suicide
Wentworth Miller told attendees at a Human Rights Campaign dinner in Seattle that he attempted suicide at the age of 15. Miller talked about his struggles as a teen "speaking the right way, standing the right way, holding your wrist the right way. Every day was a test and there were a thousand ways to fail. A thousand ways to betray yourself and not live up to someone else's standard of what was acceptable."
Early TV Career
Miller's first television appearance was in 1998 on Buffy the Vampire Slayer ("Go Fish"). It wasn't until 2002 that he landed his first starring role in the ABC mini-series Dinotopia.
After a series of minor roles, Miller broke through by landing a starring role in the popular Fox Network drama Prison Break in 2005. His character, Michael Scofield, was a concerned inmate convicted of a crime he did not commit. To save himself and his brother from death row he helped come up with an elaborate plan of escape. His performance earned him a 2005 Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Actor in a Dramatic Series.
Miller's other credits include two Mariah Carey videos ("It's Like That" and "We Belong Together"), Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, and Resident Evil: Afterlife. He made his screenwriting debut with the 2013 dramatic thriller film Stoker, which stars Nicole Kidman and Mia Wasikowska.
So, who is Wentworth Miller's special love interest?
