In order to treat a toothache, the cause of the toothache must be found. Once the cause is determined, your dentist will give you your treatment options. If it is caused by a cavity and the cavity is not too large and deep, the most common treatment is to fill the cavity.

An antibiotic will usually be prescribed if a fever or swelling of the jaw is present. Such procedures are generally done in stages, with pain and infection being cared for immediately, and reconstructive procedures being performed at a later time (weeks to months). Clean between your teeth using dental floss, wood sticks or an inter-dental brush according to your dentist's advice. Visit your dentist regularly. This way, problems can be diagnosed early and your treatment will be more straightforward.

Using clove oil to numb the gums; the oil may be rubbed directly on the sore area or used to soak a small piece of cotton and applied to the sore tooth.

The mouth is the place of the kapha dosha. Hence when the kapha dosha gets vitiated, there are oral and dental problems, including toothache. Ayurveda takes care of toothache by pacifying the kapha dosha. This is achieved by using a wide variety of herbs that can be used as toothpowders, toothpaste and toothbrushes.

Wisdom teeth can cause pain. As wisdom teeth (molars) are coming out, they cause inflammation of the gum around the erupted crown. The gum overlying the crown may become infected. The tooth most commonly involved is the lower third molar. The pain may extend to the jaw and ear. There may be swelling in the affected area so that the jaw cannot be closed properly. In severe cases, pain in the throat and the floor of the mouth may make it difficult to swallow.

At the dentist's office, fillings, pulling teeth or other procedures may be performed as required. A tooth extraction will be the most likely procedure with a baby tooth. On permanent teeth if the problem is severe, root canals (sealing off the root of the tooth) and crown procedures are generally performed.

Latest research has confirmed the bactericidal properties of onion. If a person consumes one raw onion every day by thorough mastication, he will be protected from host of tooth disorders. Chewing raw onion for three minutes is sufficient to kill all the germs in the mouth. Toothache is often allayed by placing a small piece of onion on the bad tooth or gum.

A paste of the bark of bay berry should be made with vinegar. This paste, applied on the affected tooth, will relieve the toothache. It can also be applied beneficially on the gums for strengthening them.
