How to Build a Straight Barbed-Wire Fence

16

    Preparation

    • 1). Draw a map of the area to fence. Draw a line for fence installation. Try not to run the fence through high water areas.

    • 2). Clean the fence area. There should be no briers or bushes in the way.

    • 3). Put garden stakes in a straight line around the area to be fenced. Run string or twine along the stakes, keeping it as straight as possible. This will be a guide to keep the fence straight.

    Installation

    • 1). Beginning at the corner posts, dig a hole about 3 feet deep. Put gravel or sand in the hole to help with drainage. Place a post in the hole vertically. Pour concrete around the post, keeping the post straight. Continue installing posts every 8 feet, using bracing boards when needed.

    • 2). Start to install the barbed wire on the first corner post. Place the barbed wire against the post, then staple it to the post. Staple on an angle for the best hold. The wire should be 4 inches from the ground and 8 inches from the next row.

    • 3). To end a row of wire, pull the wire tightly around the post. Wrap the wire back around itself. Make sure there is no slack in the row. Cut off any extra wire with the wire cutters.

    • 4). Install additional support boards in areas where the fence is sagging. Be sure all fence posts are straight; if not, install bracing boards.

    • 5). Pick up the garden stakes and twine. Clean up any staples or wire that fell.
