In 2002, Toyota introduced athe compact hatchback Matrix to its vehicle line. Considered a sportier version of Toyota's Corolla, the Matrix is manufactured in Canada for distribution in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Toyota added slight changes to the vehicle's exterior in 2005, and completely redesigned it in 2007, adding more options and altering the overall appearance. The company also produced two generations of the Matrix, the most current in 2009, and models from both generations offer similar options and features. - Toyota offers standard interior and exterior features for its Matrix base model. It has a 1.8-liter, four-cylinder engine with 132 horsepower. Fabric seats are standard, but a leather upgrade option is available. A CD player with MP3 playback capability and four speakers add to the vehicle's basic stereo system. Also, the base model includes four-way adjustable front seats, a fold-down rear seat and a rear window defogger with a timer.
- The S model has similar features to the base model, with the exception of a few features, such as integrated front fog lamps and a rear window wiper. The engine is a 2.4 liter and the horsepower increases from 132 to 158. The passenger seat folds flat and the center console includes a split-level storage box in contrast to the basic storage box included inside of the base model. The stereo system is basically the same as the lower-priced base model, with the exception of six speakers instead of four.
- The XRS Matrix offers the most features of all three models and is the most expensive. Like the S model, its engine is a 2.4 liter with 158 horsepower, but other additions to the exterior and interior distinguish it from all other models. Front and rear spoilers, along with a hatch mounted roof spoiler, upgrade the exterior. Also, it comes with 18-inch alloy wheels, larger than those on the base and S models. A leather-trimmed steering wheel with audio controls and more stylish, sportier looking seats are interior upgrades.
- All three Matrix models have universal safety features including anti-lock brakes, front and rear airbags and front driver and passenger side head restraints. Toyota included Vehicle Stability Control on all models, a system that decreases engine power and applies pressure to wheels when it detects road problems, thereby reducing traction loss and preventing wheels from slipping. Also, all Matrix models have heated exterior mirrors, cruise control, power windows and locks and a system that monitors tire pressure.
