One of the most painful realizations you will eventually come to is that the only control you have over the situation is how you react to it.
Unfortunately, many people allow the pain and suffering to send them into a complete non-functional state.
Days, and perhaps even weeks, may be spent in bed, either withdrawing through sleep or crying until you look like a fetal pig.
A lot of people have well-meaning advice for how to deal with depression after a breakup.
Some of it takes the form of "move on," or "get over it.
" I, personally, believe that taking some time to process and grieve is necessary to begin the healing process.
The length of time needed to make healthy progress is going to depend on the individual.
However, there are some guidelines you can use which might make the process a little easier to bear.
Keep in mind that these are merely suggestions and should only be implemented if, and when, you feel up to it.
  • Numbness is typical in the beginning.
    Be aware that the impact of the breakup may not hit you immediately.
    However, when it does, don't hold back the tears.
    Crying is the body's natural, healthy way to get rid of any buildup of emotional waste.

  • Another effective and healthy way of releasing painful emotions is to tell someone you trust exactly how you're feeling and thinking.
    You'd be surprised how cleansing it can be to just give spoken words to what you are experiencing.

  • This interaction can also help strengthen relationships with your friends or family.
    If, up to now, your time with these important people has been limited because of your relationship, you can now spend time with people who truly love and respect you.

  • Getting rid of pent up feelings can also help prevent you from becoming carried away and begging your ex to come back.

  • As much as you are able, try not to replay the breakup over and over in your head.
    Furthermore, don't continually play the game, "If only I had...
    " It doesn't change what has happened and it can drive you further into a depression.

  • Don't add more pain to yourself by thinking you're inherently unlucky.
    As I heard someone once say, "in Life, everybody gets their turn in the barrel.
    " Acknowledge that this is just "your turn" and soon it's going to be someone else's.
As you work through your pain and sorrow, you will reach a point where it will become easier to accept what has happened.
Your perspective will change and you will begin to see the "bigger picture" for your life and how this experience was necessary for you to get where you're going.
These simple suggestions you can use after a breakup can also serve you well when other difficulties come your way.
Just remember, you may not be able to control what happens to you, but you can control how you react to it.
