How to Obtain U.S. Secretary of State Guidelines on Immigration
- 1). Access the website of the U.S. Department of State at state.gov. On the homepage you can view and read information about the secretary and browse through the tabs on American foreign policy. To access information concerning immigration, locate the "Travel" tab on the uppermost navigation bar and select "Visas" from the drop-down menu.
- 2). Click on the "Immigrate" thumbnail located in the center of the page. From here you will be directed to a page describing the types of immigrant visas available and links to each type and their specific procedure and application requirements.
- 3). Scroll the mouse over the navigation column on the left side of the page until you rest upon "Laws, Regulations, and Policy" and choose "Foreign Affairs Manual" from the drop-down menu. Only do this if you wish to download exact copies of immigration law. Select the hyperlinked text "9 Fam Visas" in the middle of the page. You will be directed to a long list of notes and policy regulations.
- 4). Search for the U.S. Immigration and Nationality Act Transcript. Though this is not law issued by the Secretary of State, it contains all policy and regulation regarding matters of immigration and citizenship in the United States. The INA is not available on the website of the Department of State; instead it must be accessed through the U.S. House of Representatives Office of the Law Revision Counsel. This website is difficult to navigate, as you must insert the title and part numbers of the laws you are looking for. Refer to the Resources section below for a third-party website for a copy of the INA pulled from the website of the Law Revision Counsel.
