What Is An Actual Tax Return Document?

27
Every April, the vast majority of Americans are required to submit forms to the government and pay what they owe on their income from the previous year. These proceeds keep the government running, allowing it to finance the services that it provides for the populace. However, most of the people who pay these funds are unaware of what they're really submitting. The entire, complete document is referred to as your tax return, regardless of how complicated it may be.

Telling The Government What You Owe

Regardless of company promises describing "tax made easy" or "simple filing procedures" at the core, they're all submitting the same forms. The reason it's easier for you is because someone else is completing them based on your information, or alternatively because you're working with a computer program that breaks down the often complicated language of the actual form into something a lot more manageable.

At the core, no matter how you look at it or what you use, the goal of this form and all of its various addendums is to ensure that the government receives a fair cut of what you've made. In most cases, you'll have paid at least some amount of money throughout the past year. In some cases this will be an estimate that is lower than what you actually owe, which results in you needing to pay more. But for many people, they actually pay more than they end up owing, which nets them a refund. Both of these outcomes are determined by the same form.

One Filing, Many Papers

Your tax return is comprised of all the various papers that are necessary to describe your condition to the government. Nowadays, it's relatively rare for just one paper to suffice. There are numerous exemptions, conditions, and other things which can complicate and differentiate your filing from anyone else's. All of these are reflected in the length of what you submit, often making the completed submission quite lengthy. However, with the ability to now file electronically, this is much less of a problem. As a result, it's not uncommon to have no physical tax return document EUR" instead, it exists completely online, saved on your computer and sent to the IRS.

Who Submits It?

Technically, any person or entity that made money is responsible for sending one. That means businesses must send one as well, although it's usually a different one from that which applies to individuals. These lines get a little blurry for self-employed individuals, and often it's best to get help determining the right kind of status for your situation.
