DIY: Easy Teen Bedroom
- 1). Paint the walls a neutral color, such as white, cream, tan or gray. This allows the room to be easily redesigned later.
- 2). Place an area rug in the center of the bedroom if it is not carpeted.
- 3). Select a bed, dresser and desk with simple, angular silhouettes and ample storage. Avoid particle board and other composites.
- 4). Paint furniture as desired. Use the same paint as the walls to give the furniture a built-in look. Stencil or free-hand designs on the furniture to create a coherent theme. For example, add basketballs, footballs or baseballs for a sports theme. To make future remodels easier, avoid decoupaging or wallpapering the furniture.
- 5). Set up the desk in an area of the room where sun glare and outside noise will not affect homework and personal projects. Place the bed against a wall to maximize floor space; the dresser and storage unit can double as room dividers or be placed against the wall. Ensure there is sufficient space for a fish tank or small animal cage, if your child has pets.
- 6). Use a closet organization system or metal shelving unit to add storage space to the closet; an adjustable unit permits growth. Organize clothing, and throw away, repurpose or donate items that are no longer used. Ensure there is a space for storing a book bag and textbooks. Hang a pocket organizer on the closet door.
- 7). Install a large corkboard or dry erase board. Decorate with photos. Reserve a space for posting school projects.
- 8). Purchase or make accessories and linens that add color, character and texture. Allow your teen to select his own decorations, such as posters, lamps, plants, wastebasket and toys. Check online and in magazines for decorative craft projects.
