All Cats Have Asperger Syndrome - Perfect For Sharing With Your Child, Extended Family and Friends

11
I cannot now remember how I found this book - but it is my favourite and our son's too.
When receiving a diagnosis of Asperger Syndrome in one so young it can be difficult to know where to turn for support and advice.
There is a wealth of information available online and in books - often what you need to know is cloaked in technical psychologist terms and can be bewildering, overwhelming and scary to the newly diagnosed.
Particularly, the more you read, the more you recognise the 'common traits' in you, your husband and your extended family! So, how do you break the news to your 5 year old, his grandparents, his aunts, uncles and cousins, your friends? With this book by Kathy Hoopman: All Cats Have Aspergers Syndrome, I found the perfect solution.
We had cats, I grew up with cats, most of our extended family has cats' too so it made perfect sense to us.
We were all familiar with the quirky nature of cats (even if you are not the book still makes a whole lot of sense and the photos are too cute).
Touching, humorous and insightful, this book evokes the joys and challenges of raising a child who is different.
It leaves the reader with a sense of the dignity, individuality and potential of people with Asperger Syndrome.
When I told family members about Aspergers - I gave them this book to read and you could tell instantly by their reactions that they just got it - most said, "But, that's just like me!" Funny that...
! Aspergers tends to run in families.
Kathy's book is beautifully written and the photos well chosen to highlight the most common traits, characteristics, quirks - call them what you will of people with Aspergers in such a way as to not cause offence but highlight the positive in what can initially seem like a negative situation.
My favourite line from the book...
'but don't forget, everyone is different in his own way and there is a little bit of Asperger in us all.
'
My home library contains many books on Asperger Syndrome and I have borrowed many more from public libraries and autism organisations.
I have read them all as I seek to better understand my son and our complicated family dynamics.
It is impossible to expect others to do the same, as our lives are so often very busy and as complex as ever, this is simply an impossible wish.
I highly recommend this book as the perfect book to present to people with little time but much need to learn about Asperger Syndrome (your child's teachers and classmates for example).
It is also a great book to present to children, those on the spectrum and those in the neuro-typical population who would all benefit from understanding their peers with Asperger Syndrome.
This book is ultimately cute and sweet, not top-shelf research, but gentle and gracious.
A perfect specialists' office and coffee table book to spark interest and enable discussions.
I love it!
