Deer Trough Directions

    • 1). Lay your barrel on a flat surface and cut it in half horizontally. This will leave you with two long bases, although you will only need one for this project. Turn the base upside down and drill a number of small, evenly spaced holes along the bottom of the base. These holes will allow rain and moisture to drain out of the trough and keep your feed dry.

    • 2). Cut two 4-inch long slots in one end of each of your PVC sections, using the power saw. The slots need to be approximately half an inch wide to allow the feed to be dispensed at a steady rate.

    • 3). Turn your trough base over and place one pipe at each end with the slotted ends resting against the bottom. Drill two sets of holes through the back of the base on each side of the pipes, and fasten the pipes to the base with zip ties. This will help keep the pipes from sliding around while deer feed from the trough.

    • 4). Transport the trough to a secluded spot on your property. Place it against a sturdy tree and fasten one of the pipes to the tree with zip ties. Tying it to the tree will prevent deer from moving it around your property.

    • 5). Pour a small amount of feed in the bottom of the trough to entice deer to eat from your feeder and fill each of the pipes with feed. As the deer eat, the slots in the pipe will allow the feeder to automatically refill itself. Place a cap over each pipe to keep your feed dry.
