How to Give Heartgard Tablets
- 1). Get your pet tested for heartworm before you starting use Heartgard tablets. A simple blood test performed by your veterinarian will determine if your pet is infected. If so, it must receive treatment for the disease before it begins taking a heartworm preventative.
- 2). Purchase the correct dose from your veterinarian. For dogs, Heartgard is sold in three sizes--for dogs 25 pounds and under, for dogs between 26 and 50 pounds and for dogs between 51 and 100 pounds. If your dog is over 100 pounds, give him a combination of tablets to achieve the correct dose.
- 3). Remove one tablet from the packaging. Place the remaining tablets back in the original box to prevent exposure to light.
- 4). Wrap the tablet in a small amount of cheese or peanut butter and offer it to your dog as a treat. If your dog refuses to swallow it, try mixing the tablet in with his dog food.
- 5). Monitor your dog after administering Heartgard tablets. If you notice any unusual reactions, including vomiting, diarrhea, loss of balance or lethargy, take him to the veterinarian immediately.
- 6). Give your dog a new Heartgard tablet once per month for continuous protection from heartworm and other parasites. Provide the treatment on the same day each month.
