- 4). Compute your adjusted gross income. Following the instructions on the form, enter your adjustments to income on lines16 through 19 and enter the total on line 20. Subtract line 20 from line 15. This is your adjusted gross income; enter it on lines 21 and 22.
- 5). Determine your taxable income. Follow the instructions for lines 23 through 26 to calculate your standard deduction and exemptions. Subtract them from the amount on line 22 and enter the result on line 27. This is your taxable income. Use the tax tables or the alternative minimum tax worksheet to find the amount of tax you owe. Enter it on line 28.
- 6). Follow the instructions for lines 29 through 43, listing your credits and tax payments to determine either the amount you overpaid or the amount you still owe the IRS for 2006. If you overpaid, you can choose the amount you want the IRS to refund to you, or apply to your 2007 income tax bill. If you still owe income tax, you can calculate your tax penalty on the form or opt to let the IRS do it for you.
- 7). Sign and date your return. If you're filing a joint return, ensure that your spouse also signs and dates it.
