2,200 Calorie Diabetic Diet
- During the course of the day, six to 11 servings of starches are recommended. Suggested starches include black beans, kidney beans, chick peas, white corn and whole grains. For breakfast, try a bowl of oatmeal to fulfill an early serving of starch. For lunch, have a few breadsticks. At dinner, a dinner roll will suffice.
- Vegetables are a key part of any diet, and a diabetic's diet is no different. Three to five servings are necessary in a 2,200 calorie diet. Veggies at lunch might consist of lettuce and celery, or a green pepper and broccoli. Whatever it may be, do not forget to eat your vegetables.
- Fruits are packed with great vitamins and minerals but also sugar. Be careful on how much you take in. Two to four servings are recommended per day, so try and stick to apples, tomatoes, raspberries and blue berries.
- Meat is essential in a diabetic's diet. For this diet, four to six oz. of meat are recommended per day. You can also substitute tofu as a meat product. Great choices would be salmon, chicken, lean pork and beef. Peanut butter is also rich in protein, so substituting that for one of your meats would be acceptable.
- For dairy products, stick to low-fat milk and yogurts. Two to three servings are recommended. For breakfast, try a bowl of yogurt or a glass of milk with your omelet. Cottage cheese is also a great choice as it is packed with vitamins and protein.
