Cutting Textured Glass Technique

    • 1). Sketch out the design for your project. Determine where and how you will use the textured glass. Draw the shape you need for your completed piece of textured glass on a piece of paper.

    • 2). Clean the textured glass with a glass cleaner. Dry the glass.

    • 3). Hold up the piece of textured glass you want to cut. Almost all textured glass has a smooth side and a textured side. You want to score and cut the smooth side of the glass.

    • 4). Add oil to your glass cutter. Oil helps the glass cutter glide across the glass.

    • 5). Place the paper with the drawn shape onto the textured side of the glass. Use a permanent magic marker to trace the shape of the paper onto the smooth side of transparent glass. For opaque glass, turn the shape over and trace a mirror image of the shape you need cut onto the smooth side of the opaque glass.

    • 6). Check the line you traced before you begin to cut. The textured side of the glass will be a mirror image of the smooth side if the shape you are using is not symmetrical.

    • 7). Use a glass cutter to cut a score line in the shape you need on the smooth side of the glass. The glass cutter will be difficult to use and not cut glass as easily on the textured side of the glass. Do not use excess pressure as you cut the score line. Use one even stroke as you score the glass.

    • 8). Use flat pliers or glass breaking pliers to break the scored glass. You may need to make more than one cut, depending on the shape you are cutting. For example, in most cases you will need to make two cuts if you are cutting a square or rectangle.
